First Aid at Work Level 3 Course FAQ: Your Questions Answered
This First Aid at Work Level 3 course FAQ pulls together the questions employers and delegates ask us most, from how many first aiders a workplace actually needs to how long a certificate stays valid once you have it. Rather than spreading the answers across separate pages, we have put the most common ones in one place so you can find what you need quickly, without digging through legislation yourself. If you are ready to book, you can view our first aid training and secure your place today.
How Many First Aiders Does Your Workplace Need
This is the question we get asked more than any other. There is no single legal number, but the Health and Safety Executive gives clear working guidelines. In lower risk workplaces, such as offices and shops, the general benchmark is one trained first aider for every 50 employees. In higher risk environments, such as construction sites, warehouses and manufacturing, that ratio tightens to one first aider for roughly every 25 employees, since the likelihood and severity of injury is greater.
These figures are a starting point rather than a fixed rule. A proper first aid needs assessment, looking at your specific site, shift patterns, and the number of buildings or floors involved, is what actually determines the right number for your business. If you run a construction site, you may also want to look at our SMSTS courses, which cover wider site safety responsibilities for managers and supervisors.
What Is the Difference Between FAW and EFAW
First Aid at Work, usually shortened to FAW, is the more comprehensive qualification, covering a wider range of injuries and illnesses including fractures, chest injuries, poisoning and anaphylactic shock alongside core skills like CPR. Emergency First Aid at Work, or EFAW, is a shorter course focused on the essential, immediately life saving skills needed in an emergency.
Which one you need generally depends on your workplace risk level and headcount under the HSE guidance covered above, with higher risk and larger sites more likely to need FAW trained staff. If you are unsure which level is right for your team, get in touch with us and we can help you work it out before you book.
First Aid at Work Level 3 Course FAQ: How Long Does Your Certificate Last
A First Aid at Work Level 3 certificate is valid for three years from the date you pass. Before it expires, you can requalify through a shorter course, typically two days rather than the original three, which keeps your certification current for a further three years.
Important: If your certificate lapses before you requalify, you will usually need to retake the full course. Diarise your renewal date well ahead of time. Book your first aid course before the expiry date to avoid paying for the full course again.
What Does a First Aid at Work Course Actually Cover
The course is built around practical, hands-on skills rather than theory alone. Expect to cover assessing an emergency situation and making the right decisions quickly, CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, and how to manage an unconscious casualty. It also covers:
- Wounds and bleeding
- Shock
- Seizures
- Heart attacks and strokes
- Burns and scalds
- Fractures and spinal injuries
- Anaphylactic shock
Delegates are assessed throughout through group exercises and case studies, with a multiple choice test on the final day. If you also manage or supervise workers on site, our SSSTS course covers the safety responsibilities that sit alongside first aid duties at supervisory level.
Can First Aid at Work Level 3 Training Be Done Entirely Online
Not for the full First Aid at Work Level 3 qualification. Because the course involves hands-on practical skills, including CPR technique and use of an AED, the practical elements need to be delivered in person so a tutor can properly assess technique. Some providers offer a blended approach with online theory alongside in person practical sessions, but a fully remote course is not appropriate for a qualification that depends on demonstrating a physical skill correctly under assessment.
Looking for online options? While First Aid at Work Level 3 training must be completed in person, many of our other courses are available as live online classes. View our online SMSTS courses for flexible weekday and weekend scheduling with no venue travel required.
What to Check Before You Book
Not every course billed as First Aid at Work Level 3 training leads to the same qualification. Before you commit, it is worth confirming:
- The course leads to a regulated, nationally recognised RQF or equivalent qualification, not an in-house certificate without external accreditation.
- AED and CPR practice is included as standard, not as an optional extra charged separately.
- You know what happens if a delegate does not pass first time, since providers vary considerably on whether a resit is included or charged again.
- Class sizes are small enough that every delegate gets adequate hands-on time with the equipment.
A large class with limited equipment can mean less individual practice time, which matters most for CPR and AED skills since these are the techniques people are least likely to repeat outside of training. Our first aid course keep group sizes to a level where everyone gets proper hands-on time throughout.
